Build Up. Dig Down.

Malgrave's Spire is a pixel-art fantasy tower builder with a dungeon underneath. You are the Steward: raise the spire one floor at a time, move in the Spirefolk, put them to work, and send the brave ones into the depths for loot.

Above ground

  • Stack homes, shops and guild floors: Crypt Flats, the Wand Emporium, the Rusty Flagon, the Forge, the Barracks and plenty more.
  • Run the lift, welcome VIPs, collect coins and pass decrees to keep the tower humming.
  • Meet the tenants. Witches, zombies, werewolves and other respectable folk wander the floors, gossip from the balconies and get on with their day.

Below ground

  • Dig new depths beneath the gatehouse and delve into the lairs waiting there.
  • Your residents do the fighting. Give them a class, level them up, kit them out and send them down.
  • Haul the loot back up to build and upgrade floors and to craft gear in the workshops.
  • The dark does not always stay put. Raids climb the spire, sometimes while you are away.

A tower that keeps going

  • The spire carries on when you close the tab. Come back to see what happened while you were gone.
  • Fill the Album (184 entries) and the Wardrobe (87 pieces).
  • Join a Local at the Stewards' Union and turn up for live events such as Raid Weekend.

How to play

  • Drag, scroll or use the arrow keys to move around the spire.
  • Home and End fly to the roof and the depths.
  • Ctrl + scroll, or + and −, to zoom.
  • Tap floors to open them and tap coins to collect.

Plays in your browser on desktop and mobile. Best with sound on.

AI Disclosure

As someone working in the IT industry for over 11-years even before the advent of AI, I want to be upfront about how AI was used to make Malgrave's Spire.

Not AI:

・ZERO GENERATIVE AI ON ART. All the art is pixel art drawn by me. Stuff like walking animations are not drawn, but just generated pixels in code, and are used by all the npcs through ought the game.
・All of the room designs, and backgrounds are made by me.
・While the actual game is based from a now-retired game (Star Wars: Tiny Death Star), the game design, world, characters, balances, and economy projections/systems are mine.
・All music, and sound effects are royalty-free music/sound effects

What is AI:

・Parts of the code responsible for the background aesthetic animations such as twinkle of stars, lights and shadowing, pulsating lights, fogs, clouds floating around, randomizers for the system that creates the spire connections.
・While music, and sound effects are royalty-free, these files are not used in the game. Instead, they are synthesized in order to reduce overall file size, lowering overall game size from 61MB to 32MB.
・Translations. The non-English text, and captions are all translated by AI. I only wrote the English text versions.

Hi!

I recently discovered your game and really liked it, very retro :)

I've just started a new Reddit community called r/RetroFrontier, dedicated to retro gaming, classic computing, homebrew projects and modern creative experimentation.

One of the ideas behind it is to create a welcoming environment for indie developers who use AI in their creative process, alongside those working with more traditional tools.

Would you be interested in presenting your game there?

Here's the community:
https://www.reddit.com/r/RetroFrontier/

It's still very new, but I'd love to build it into a place where interesting projects can be discovered and discussed.

Best regards!

Maximus

Hello. I appreciate the comment! Unfortunately I don't really use Reddit, nor do I want to create a reddit account, but you are free to post if there if you want.

I added an AI disclosure in the game description, just to clarify which are using AI when making this game, if it helps.

No problem at all, I totally understand! Thanks for letting me share your game! :-)

Holy how long did this take you

Hello! Thanks for trying it out! It took me like a year and a half to build. The game is based off an old mobile game "star wars tiny death star" which I really loved back when it was still online. I wanted to make my own version too, and this was the result!
